“Rusty Cogs” (poem / poetry)

Why does it have to be so gruelling,
To get my body to work today?
“Running on empty! In need of refuelling!”
Is the message that graces my vessel’s display.

Nothing short of an uphill struggle,
Is what I’m experiencing at present,
Cringing as if I’ve just got into trouble,
And someone’s determined to teach me a lesson.

I want to yell, “What have I done?!”
But fear this could lead to a harsher result,
I can’t move a muscle, like I’ve been stunned,
Unable to fight it, but is this my fault?

Torn to pieces and stitched back together,
The plan was not followed on reassembly,
Not the first time though, I should’ve known better,
It’s hard to maintain patience aplenty.

Something’s once again under my skin,
Past my defences, well, nobody’s perfect,
It commences its painful assault from within,
Aiming to see, who can push who the furthest.

Inside me it’s bubbling, corroding my innards,
Like a bad tenant, it’s hard to evict,
It heads inside further, mimicking splinters,
In this case, ignorance is clearly not bliss.

I have to confront my issues head-on,
They won’t disappear, they’ll only get worse,
If I let them be, so I need to get on,
By venting frustrations, you make them disperse.

Adjusting your outlook, you take control back,
Lubricating your system, so things aren’t so bleak,
I tell you right now, I’d much rather have,
Tight cogs than popped clogs, any day of the week.

Hey friends, as I mentioned in my last post, I’m on a break from writing new material at the moment, but to show that I haven’t forgotten you all, I’m sharing one of my exclusive (published, but never before shared online) poems, around once a fortnight, until I’m in a position to share my new material again.

Today, I’ve chosen to share a piece about those moments when you feel completely drained, physically and emotionally, and you’re trying to find the strength to turn things around. It’s something that may feel impossible at first, but is achievable when we put our minds to it.

I’d like to add that it’s perfectly normal to feel this way, we all go through it at some point in our lives, but you deserve better than to allow yourself to remain in this state, so whether you reach out to friends and loved ones for support, or transform the way you view whatever’s getting you down, you can find the fuel to move forwards.

I believe in you… so please believe in yourself too, and as always, if you’d like to chat with me about anything, you are more than welcome to drop me a DM, any time.

Love and Respect always,

Following Whispers.

Author: Following Whispers

Hello, I'm Following Whispers, an English poet and author who has been writing for over two decades. I'm a self-professed geek who can get deep sometimes, but I personally don't take myself too seriously, I just love to have fun, plus inspire myself and others. In my early twenties, I realised that beauty can be born out of not only love, but also pain and other motivations. The more I used writing poetry to make sense of my busy mind, the more it helped me to find a silver lining in even the darkest emotions, experiences, observations and topics; find positivity even in the face of extreme negativity; find strength when I was being forced to feel weak; and find hope that my tomorrows would be brighter. I began publishing my writing in 2018 and currently have three books available Worldwide, including my most recent release "Poems That Move You". I have bared my soul in each and every one of my poems, and I'm confident that you'll get just as much from reading them and relating them, as I did from writing them. Please feel free to look around my site and read the free poems I've shared there, after which, why not pick up a book of mine, drop by Instagram, connect with me and say hello!
