“Doctor Etymology” (poem / poetry)

He asked for a word… someone shouted “bomb”!

He began to dissect it, as the classroom looked on,

Going from Greek origins, as the word Bombos,

To the Latin, Italian, French, and English cosmos.

It can describe an explosive; or lump of lava;

A miserable failure; a fishing line anchor;

Something fantastic; high speed; lots of money;

He proved that a word can be versatile putty.

For reasons I can’t explain, I chose to picture an auditorium, with a Professor speaking to his students, wanting to touch on the history and pliability of words, their ever evolving uses, meanings, and the like.

Having such a command of language as this Professor is inferred to have, is practically a superpower! …hence the superhero-like title. Words have always interested me, but it’s fascinating to see, just how little we all know about the things we use each and every day!

What’s one of your favourite words or phrases, and why? Have you even thought about it before now!?

Being a water lover, one of my favourites is the word “Wet”… as it’s much more meaningful than you might realise, especially its use in phrases.

Does language fascinate you too?

Love and Respect always,

Following Whispers.

Author: Following Whispers

Hello, I'm Following Whispers, an English poet and author who has been writing for over two decades. I'm a self-professed geek who can get deep sometimes, but I personally don't take myself too seriously, I just love to have fun, plus inspire myself and others. In my early twenties, I realised that beauty can be born out of not only love, but also pain and other motivations. The more I used writing poetry to make sense of my busy mind, the more it helped me to find a silver lining in even the darkest emotions, experiences, observations and topics; find positivity even in the face of extreme negativity; find strength when I was being forced to feel weak; and find hope that my tomorrows would be brighter. I began publishing my writing in 2018 and currently have three books available Worldwide, including my most recent release "Poems That Move You". I have bared my soul in each and every one of my poems, and I'm confident that you'll get just as much from reading them and relating them, as I did from writing them. Please feel free to look around my site and read the free poems I've shared there, after which, why not pick up a book of mine, drop by Instagram, connect with me and say hello!
