No advanced intel, unsure what to expect,
I prepared myself the best that I could, with respect,
To the fact I’ve never done anything like this before,
Thus far, I’ve been private in my manner, of course.
Yet time it was, to leave my plush comfort zone,
Step forth and be naked, let my soul be exposed,
Now no longer a virgin, inside I feel merry,
Thrilled at finally popping, my Spoken Word cherry.

So last night was an awfully big night for me, as I challenged myself to venture into unfamiliar territory, by performing some of my poems in public for the very first time! I had never done Spoken Word before (with previous plans falling through), and I didn’t know what to expect when I got there!
But if I plan on having a long and fruitful writing career, which I do, I feel it’s a very important string to my bow, one not to be sniffed at or ignored. The open mic event was held at a theatre that I used to go to when I was younger, to watch pantomimes and plays. Little did I know that I’d one day perform there myself!
It was a wonderful event, the organisers were extremely warm, encouraging and helpful, making me feel at home right away. The audience were very supportive, and some were massively talented themselves, I thoroughly enjoyed hearing other people’s pieces as much as I enjoyed sharing my own!
So, will this be something I never try again? …certainly not! I’m already looking into other opportunities to share my poetry orally, and I’m looking forward to doing so… the sooner the better!
When was the last time you actively left your comfort zone, and how did it go for you?
Love and Respect always,
