Meeting your Hero can often be a write off,
It may be a huge moment, or a big belly flop,
Some fans views are shattered, which is uncool,
Depending on who you choose to look up to.
So, select your Heroes wisely, not on a whim,
And hopefully you’ll smile, meeting them, her or him,
I spent the evening with one of mine recently,
He surpassed my hopes of warmth, humour and decency.

Last week, I had the opportunity to enjoy the company of one of my favourite living poets, the amazing, charismatic, ever-talented Benjamin Zephaniah. I’ve followed his work for over 15 years now, have many of his books and albums, and finally got the chance to see him in person.
It was such a wonderful experience, his poetry is even more vivid and captivating when you’re literally metres away, his character filled the room with laughter, his beautiful mind took us on an unforgettable journey… it was better than I ever could of imagined.
He was already a massive inspiration to me, but now even more so! He shared so much of himself, without a hint of ego, it came from a place of love and unity. But it got me to thinking of previous heroes who fell short of my expectations, and those who have let others down, or showed no humility or concern for others.
They say never meet your heroes. They say you’ll be disappointed more times than not. Well, I must have gotten lucky, as before anything else, he is a magnificent human being! So I had to pick up my pen, and show some gratitude to those who deserve our respect and admiration.
Love and Respect always,
