“Core Slimey” (poem / poetry)

I’m feeling quite Sluggish, drained of my energy,

My movements are slow, but they feel intense to me,

I’m trying to get somewhere, dodging pellets and salt,

The Gardener is angry, which is kinda my fault.

I mean, I’ve been feasting on their plants and herbs,

Just trying to survive, in a fast-paced World,

When it rains, I speed up, like I’m using a sail,

One day, I’ll splash out, and upgrade to a Snail.

Slugs have got a raw deal, wouldn’t you say?! They travel an average speed of like 3 metres an hour, and are somehow supposed to survive ever-changing obstacles… to eat, they have to scavenge, feasting on whatever’s edible that’s lying around, and they’re lucky if they don’t fall foul of angry gardeners and their protective measures.

What’s worse, is when Winter starts, and their cousins, the snails, have a shell to hibernate in, a slug’s only option is to try and dig their way underground to escape the chill, but they only usually manage to ensure the survival of their eggs, before kicking the bucket! …harsh times!

Fancy having such tough circumstances, that you’re envious of a snail… now that IS dire! 😆🤣 I am green fingered and have started growing my own crops, and I do get frustrated when slugs show up, but I recently decided to look at things from their perspective too!

So, the next time you’re feeling down, just think of what those poor slugs are going through, and you’ll quickly remember just how good you have it in comparison!

Love and Respect always,

Following Whispers.

Author: Following Whispers

Hello, I'm Following Whispers, an English poet and author who has been writing for around two decades. I'm a self-professed geek who can get deep sometimes, but I personally don't take myself too seriously, I just love to have fun, plus inspire myself and others. In my early twenties, I realised that beauty can be born out of not only love, but also pain and other motivations. The more I used writing poetry to make sense of my busy mind, the more it helped me to find a silver lining in even the darkest emotions, experiences, observations and topics; find positivity even in the face of extreme negativity; find strength when I was being forced to feel weak; and find hope that my tomorrows would be brighter. I began publishing my writing in 2018 and currently have three books available Worldwide, including my most recent release "Poems That Move You". I have bared my soul in each and every one of my poems, and I'm confident that you'll get just as much from reading them and relating them, as I did from writing them. Please feel free to look around my site and read the free poems I've shared there, after which, why not pick up a book of mine, drop by Instagram, connect with me and say hello!
