“Real Strength” (poem / poetry)

There’s a time to be strong, and a time to be delicate,

Sometimes we see both, like a hug from an elephant,

We are taught to be tough, to ensure we succeed,

The thicker your hide, the less likely you’ll bleed.

But aggression robs us, of what we need most,

Love and friendship, in this harsh climate, are toast,

Showing tenderness, takes courage aplenty,

In truth, we are strongest, when we treat others gently.

We are told that strength is the use of intense force against (or dominance over) something or someone else, and this is somehow justified by mantras such as “survival of the fittest” and “winner takes all”.

This mindset totally misses the point of strength and it’s cousin, courage. These brutal displays actually show more weakness, greed, insecurity and fear, than anything else. The more we exude this bravado, the greater the cavity that grows inside of us, and the emptier we feel.

Being honest with others, instead of hiding behind a facade; showing your vulnerability; accepting your flaws, while working towards addressing them; being repeatedly knocked down by life, but finding a way to get back up and keep going; showing love to others; etc; these are better examples of strength.

The long and short of it is, a kind heart is way stronger than a cruel one, so to embody real strength, show warmth and understanding, and don’t let life get the better of you.

Love and Respect always,

Following Whispers.

Author: Following Whispers

Hello, I'm Following Whispers, an English poet and author who has been writing for around two decades. I'm a self-professed geek who can get deep sometimes, but I personally don't take myself too seriously, I just love to have fun, plus inspire myself and others. In my early twenties, I realised that beauty can be born out of not only love, but also pain and other motivations. The more I used writing poetry to make sense of my busy mind, the more it helped me to find a silver lining in even the darkest emotions, experiences, observations and topics; find positivity even in the face of extreme negativity; find strength when I was being forced to feel weak; and find hope that my tomorrows would be brighter. I began publishing my writing in 2018 and currently have three books available Worldwide, including my most recent release "Poems That Move You". I have bared my soul in each and every one of my poems, and I'm confident that you'll get just as much from reading them and relating them, as I did from writing them. Please feel free to look around my site and read the free poems I've shared there, after which, why not pick up a book of mine, drop by Instagram, connect with me and say hello!
