“Mistaken Assumptions” (poem / poetry)

There’s often a rift between truth and perception,

Sometimes caused by ignorance, others, deception,

What’s shown and what’s real, can be so far apart,

Things we’re made to believe, opposing their heart.

You’ll find proud people, who have rotten cores,

Those with internal riches, are quite often poor,

Folks empty inside, might be first to boast,

And the most loving people, may need love the most.

Never make the mistake that you have everything and everyone figured out, as there is always more to things, than what we are able to (or allowed to) witness or interpret.

Some of the most beautiful and kind hearted souls can seem distant, but may merely be protecting a pain-ridden and now fragile heart, so they’re overly cautious who they let get close; people with outgoing personalities might be overcompensating for a deep emptiness inside or other hidden struggles.

People’s motives are rarely apparent, we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, we don’t necessarily know their actual values and morals, only the facade that we’ve seen, or the assumptions we’ve developed, based on bits and pieces of often flawed or biased information.

So, the underlying message, don’t underestimate people’s feelings, and don’t claim to fully understand their motivations, or what lies in their heart; even when they open up to us, it most likely won’t be the full picture… anyone can surprise you, totally redefining the image of them that you’d constructed in your head, pleasantly or otherwise.

Love and Respect always,

Following Whispers.

Author: Following Whispers

Hello, I'm Following Whispers, an English poet and author who has been writing for around two decades. I'm a self-professed geek who can get deep sometimes, but I personally don't take myself too seriously, I just love to have fun, plus inspire myself and others. In my early twenties, I realised that beauty can be born out of not only love, but also pain and other motivations. The more I used writing poetry to make sense of my busy mind, the more it helped me to find a silver lining in even the darkest emotions, experiences, observations and topics; find positivity even in the face of extreme negativity; find strength when I was being forced to feel weak; and find hope that my tomorrows would be brighter. I began publishing my writing in 2018 and currently have three books available Worldwide, including my most recent release "Poems That Move You". I have bared my soul in each and every one of my poems, and I'm confident that you'll get just as much from reading them and relating them, as I did from writing them. Please feel free to look around my site and read the free poems I've shared there, after which, why not pick up a book of mine, drop by Instagram, connect with me and say hello!
