“Bested” (poetry / poem)

Early to bed, show sleep you’re the Boss…

Then stare at your eyelids, the ceiling and clock,

What went wrong? I yawned as I lay down,

But co-operation soon became a showdown.

I feel tireder now, than when I went to bed,

My eyes are retreating inside of my head,

Regardless, I must cherish each waking moment,

Time’s of the essence, a fleeting component.

Two nights ago, I had one of the worst sleep-related experiences I’ve had this year, I was pretty tired after an active day, so I turned in early, and in no time at all, my plans to recharge my batteries were smashed to pieces. It was a mixture of being too hot, with not enough breeze, having an over active mind, and a fly that must’ve thought I was playing hide and seek with it!

I got up in the morning, feeling as if I’d pulled a lorry with a tow rope, like a World’s Strongest Man contestant! I began to feel sorry for myself, but quickly had to snap myself out of it, as I have so much to be thankful for still, I have a roof over my head, a cosy bed, food when I’m hungry, a loving Wife and 4 precious children, good health, and so many other reasons to smile!

So, as tired as I felt, I got started on another action packed day, ensuring I’d be ready to pass out, come bedtime. Did I have more of the same, or finally have a good nights sleep? …now, that would be telling! 😆 All I’ll say, is my positive mental attitude, really helped get me back to my bubbly self!

As Dave Chapelle once said, “if everyone threw their problems into a pile on the floor, and someone ran off with your problems, once you saw what problems you were left with, you’d pray that you had your old problems back!”

Gratitude does so much for the soul, it makes a tough day brighter, and gives you the fuel to get through huge obstacles.

Love and Respect always,

Following Whispers.

Author: Following Whispers

Hello, I'm Following Whispers, an English poet and author who has been writing for over two decades. I'm a self-professed geek who can get deep sometimes, but I personally don't take myself too seriously, I just love to have fun, plus inspire myself and others. In my early twenties, I realised that beauty can be born out of not only love, but also pain and other motivations. The more I used writing poetry to make sense of my busy mind, the more it helped me to find a silver lining in even the darkest emotions, experiences, observations and topics; find positivity even in the face of extreme negativity; find strength when I was being forced to feel weak; and find hope that my tomorrows would be brighter. I began publishing my writing in 2018 and currently have three books available Worldwide, including my most recent release "Poems That Move You". I have bared my soul in each and every one of my poems, and I'm confident that you'll get just as much from reading them and relating them, as I did from writing them. Please feel free to look around my site and read the free poems I've shared there, after which, why not pick up a book of mine, drop by Instagram, connect with me and say hello!
