“Stairway To Nowhere” (poetry / poem)

Standing in the middle of these far-reaching steps,

This climb has drained me, not that you’d guess,

I need to keep going, surely, I must finish,

But I’ve changed inside, my heart’s no longer in it!

Why do I stay for perpetuity’s sake?

My soul withers more, with each step that I take!

I turn ‘round and run all the way to the ground,

“I’m free!” and soon after, my true path is found.

I’m sure we’ve all had times in our lives, where we kept pursuing something that did not benefit us, at all, or anywhere near what we thought it would when we began investing in it, yet we continued with it for a long time, because we were sold on the idea of it, not what transpired.

I can think of several I’ve experienced, such as relationships that I gave my all to, but saw no reciprocation or growth; the pursuit and attainment of my Degree, which ended up serving me very little; jobs where I continually outshone most of my colleagues, yet only received minuscule appreciation and empty promises from my Boss.

Quite frankly, most of my life I’ve felt misunderstood, under-appreciated, and have often found myself caught up in investing in things that did not even remotely deserve my efforts, dedication, skills, heart, trust, time, passion or attention.

This did not deflate my ability to hope though, I knew I’d eventually see better days, but I also realised that these one-sided pursuits were lost causes. It was not a reflection of my worth or ability, however, the lessons this process bestowed me with, helped mould the confident person you see today!

It is okay to cut your losses, if it can’t be fixed and doesn’t serve you, find freedom in moving on.

Love and Respect always,

Following Whispers.

Author: Following Whispers

Hello, I'm Following Whispers, an English poet and author who has been writing for around two decades. I'm a self-professed geek who can get deep sometimes, but I personally don't take myself too seriously, I just love to have fun, plus inspire myself and others. In my early twenties, I realised that beauty can be born out of not only love, but also pain and other motivations. The more I used writing poetry to make sense of my busy mind, the more it helped me to find a silver lining in even the darkest emotions, experiences, observations and topics; find positivity even in the face of extreme negativity; find strength when I was being forced to feel weak; and find hope that my tomorrows would be brighter. I began publishing my writing in 2018 and currently have three books available Worldwide, including my most recent release "Poems That Move You". I have bared my soul in each and every one of my poems, and I'm confident that you'll get just as much from reading them and relating them, as I did from writing them. Please feel free to look around my site and read the free poems I've shared there, after which, why not pick up a book of mine, drop by Instagram, connect with me and say hello!
