A product is conceived in the depths of a mind,
A factory calibrated to build the design,
The resources needed, acquired by the tonne,
The workforce has arrived, and production’s begun.
These items fill warehouses, shops and our homes,
Tiny faults ensue, the products… disowned,
Things don’t last any more, in this throw-away culture,
But resources are finite, so what of our future?!
I think we often forget where products comes from, how much energy and processing goes into making them, and how much pollution is created as a result. So when we add to landfill by throwing out something faulty, we choose to fill our planet up with junk!
The way most of us currently choose to live, there will no doubt come a day, where junkyards will be the new shopping centres, where we will shop for parts, because we will have lost the ability to mass produce new items at an affordable price, due to the eventual scarcity of the World’s resources.
A few months back, my Mum wanted to get rid of a tumble dryer, as it would not turn, I said, “seen as you’re gonna scrap it, let me look at it first!” I opened it up, with no academic experience in this, only knowing how to avoid getting an electric shock, but I found the issue, fixed the faulty part, and hey presto… one working tumble dryer, for free!
I really miss the days when more of us were able to fix things merely with our hands, our mind and our determination! I saved my Mum lots of money, saved the planet having to house more junk, pollution and give more of itself to sustain our way of life! Answer this though, how future-proofed are you? …as our future may not be as hi-tech and idealistic as we imagine!
