There’s so much I don’t know, will you please explain?
Too embarrassed to ask, and I know I’m a pain,
Hormones going loopy, refurb’s in my brain,
I’m going through changes, again and again.
Such a confusing time, more complex than it seems,
This makes me blunt, I don’t mean to be mean,
I’ve got so many doubts plaguing my self-esteem,
The testing reality of being a Teen.
Adolescence is a remarkably confusing and difficult time, where everything you thought you knew, may come into question. We might not remember much about our own experiences of this troubling time, preferring to forget, but we should show understanding to those going through it.
During this period, there are numerous bodily changes occurring; new sensations developing within the nervous system; growth in the brain, plus a rewiring of its synapses; and much, much more. So it’s understandable that teenagers don’t always have a handle on their emotions, thoughts and reactions.
Of course, there is no excuse for disrespecting parents, elders and others, but I sometimes think we adults could deal with the situation better, by using a bit of empathy, and by creating an environment that supports open communication, to allow conversation, rather than shutting one another out.
It’s so easy to use the reflex action of anger and punishment, when something we don’t like goes down, but it’s usually more beneficial to all involved, to make an effort to diffuse the situation. A lesson that we can actually use in our adult relationships and interactions too!
