Difficult choices lay in wait,
Is life prewritten, a product of fate?
I don’t think so, I control my own life,
Milestones are aligned, based on what I decide.
Emotions cloud judgement, thus logic’s rewritten,
Would my future self, praise my indecision?
Here’s a helpful exercise I recommend…
What advice would you give, if your life was your friend’s?
We all face difficult choices at times, situations where whatever option we choose, it will cause us some form of pain, where either our heart; lifestyle; finances; loved ones; career; current happiness; friendships; freedom; relationship or health (among others) can suffer harsh consequences.
Sometimes, it may feel like we have little or no control over what’s happening around us or to us, like we are merely acting out a script, that was written long ago, that we had no say in creating, and cannot improvise or affect.
I personally don’t think that we are trapped in an preset, rigid existence, I believe that we can (and do) influence our own lives; journey and outcomes, based on our intentions; decisions; actions; thoughts; words and hopes (or lack thereof).
When you are overwhelmed by strong emotions, you may find it hard to select an option that will actually help you in the long run (or any option at all). Many decisions might be looked back on with regret by you, once you’ve lived through their effects and see their influence on your future.
A great technique that I’ve used myself for around 15 years, in order to find the best decision or path is… imagining that my life and current predicaments are my best friend’s, not mine. I then look at them rationally and actually give myself better advice! It might sound crazy, but give it a try, it’s worked wonders for me!
